Second chances; Its my second birthday

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

On this day 31 years ago, God gave me a second chance at life after a third-degree burn accident from clearing out paper trash in my bedroom and setting myself on fire in error when I was trying to burn the paper trash from my room.

The three-minute incident has shaped my life and still does to date. Whilst that sounds like a simple summary of the events of the evening of 16th of November 1991, some of the other details include mind-bugging pains within a seven-week hospital admission and another daily hospital visit for over 180 days. Three times weekly physiotherapy sessions to correct the contraction on my right leg, returning to school in clutches and having awkward pity party conversations for another five years till I graduated from secondary school. Let's not talk about negative attention for someone who dislikes attention, a longtime skewed mindset on my perception of myself, and a deliberate effort to deal with the thirty-one-year-old trauma in 2022.

A journey it has been, a battle to rise above it all, a work-in-progress still. I love the woman I am becoming, and most importantly, I am grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey. Here I am today, thankful for life and the journey in between.
